U-Bench has Birch plywood, polycarbonate, and a 3-axis CNC milling machine. The dimensions are 48”x16”x16”. The U-Bench uses finger joints, wood glue, and planks. With its U-shaped dip, the bench invites individuals to nest in the middle or lay atop it. The chaos and beauty inspired me in a collage of street art, public art, and public furniture. The idea of communal public benches inspired the thought of inviting peers at UCLA to use spray paint on the lower faces of the bench.

Process
I used Adobe Illustrator to create the shape of the bench and then used CNC to perform the cut. The bench is issued together using finger joints and glue. I use lateral supports from planks on each side of the divide to ensure that weight is supported. The supporting planks created a powerful bond between the long faces of the bench. I used a router saw to shape a strong yet translusent sheet of plastic to cover the planks. I am thrilled with the result.
